Malware Warning for Lycos/Guestworld/HtmlGear Guestbooks

This is the kind of page you hate to read and I hate to write. Next to Bravenet, Lycos guestbooks are the second most popular ones out there, but it happened.

here is the warning I got. This afternoon 4/13/03 around 1pm as I was signing a Lycos Guestbook, I got this little warning. Tempo Internet wanted to install the Xupiter Plug-in to my browser and had an expired security certificate.

This is MALWARE, software that sneaks its way on to your hard drive, unwanted and unasked for. Good software does not do this. It's available at download sites and users hearing that it is good, go and get it. MALWARE is often spyware. MALWARE is an unwanted intrusion on to your machine. MALWARE is bad news.

The only solution to the problem that I can see, is that I CAN NOT PUT ANY OF YOU AT RISK OF MALWARE EXPOSURE. I will be including email addresses with all lycos guestbook users' pages. You have the option of skipping the guestbook and sending an ecard instead.

As for your own pages, if you are a Lycos/Guestgear/htmlGear guestbook user, you may want to consider switching guestbooks. You are putting visitors at risk for MALWARE. I can't make you switch, but I can give you alternatives to threats when they arise.
